Happenings: Panels, Signing and Fashion

October 8, 2010

Panels

This panel, Lolita Fashion, was from 3:00pm to 4:00pm in room 1E12. It covered the basic guidelines and understandings of the style. This is good for those who are starting in the fashion or just want to learn about the styles’ general aspect. Because I knew most of the materials being covered, I left the panel early to conduct something else.

Ok fans of The Walking Dead, who is that on your left hand side? This picture was taken at the Image Comics: The Writers panel in room 1A14. It was packed and the authors were really funny. Even though I do not read the series, surprisingly enough, I enjoyed the panel. Not only because of the humorous personalities, but the information provided by the authors about being a writer were useful for those who want to write in the comic industry.

Autograph Signing

Ok Predator fans, the man behind the mask for the Alien verses Predator series was at the convention doing a signing, but fans had to buy the ticket and there were rules to follow. He could only write a certain amount of words, and the ticket one brought is for either only the autograph or autograph and a picture with him. You were able to take a picture of him signing though. Also, yes, Ian Whyte is VERY tall! I was surprised to see him in person! I have a hard time seeing someone who is 6’, so looking up at Whyte...

I was walking towards the lower level and right behind the escalator was Seth Green. I was like is that not the person from Buffy the Vampire Slayer? They are a very nice pair of actors, because they were posing for the crowd of fans snapping pictures of them.

Panel

The panel, Getting Paid for Your Work: A Legal Overview, was run by attorneys Thomas A. Crowell and Walter-Michael Lee with artists Allan Norico, John Payne and Adam Ghahramani. It does not matter if one is planning to be in the comics, manga or anime profession in the United States, because this panel covers it all. It was packed out! There were people standing along the walls, including myself, so it would have been nice if the panel was in a bigger room. The amount of people at the panel is evident that there is a great amount of interest amongst the creators, who wants to know how to protect themselves and their creations. Now if only there was an extra hour, because there was at least a dozen attendees talking to the panelists at the end of the event. Even though the slides were similar to the ones displayed in previous years, I liked the fact that the real life experience was included. It provides a better understanding of the relationship between the creator and the law.

Autograph Signing

Here is the man behind the Bat-Manga book, Chip Kidd, on the right, with photographer Geoff Spear, on the left, during their signing of Shazam! The Golden Age of the World's Mightiest Mortal at the Abrams Comic Arts booth #2327. Kidd did mention something interesting to me. He was thinking about making Super-Manga, something similar to Bat-Manga, only about Superman. Only time will tell if his dream will come true.

Masquerade -

This is how packed the IGN Theatre was. Before the costume event, was the concert with the guest of honor. Prior to the concert, those with a press pass, who wished to cover the concert, had to obtain approval to record video or take photographs. Also, one had to hand in his/her business card to the singer’s people. If one were approved, one was given an identifiable black sticker with letters on it. However, if I am not mistaken, one would have had to send in the recording and photographs to the singer’s people before publishing it. How do I know this? I was on the press line, and I thought this whole process was for the masquerade, until the people handling the situation clarified that it was for the concert. During the concert, I saw the same person handling the press for the concert telling people with tripods to put it away. So yes, the press rules were pretty strict. I personally had no interest in the concert, so I just sat there, watch and listen. Unfortunately, the next day my ear was hurting like crazy. It took a few days to heal. I been to another concert at a previous NYCC and one in Madison Square Garden, but now, I have to remind myself to bring in ear plugs, just in case. (@_@)

I did not enjoy the masquerade as much as I did last year, because the performances were not as entertaining. However, I did enjoy Uncle Yo’s humor and improvised acts as a host. He made me laugh through out the show. Another entertaining “act” was Mario-Ernando Bueno and his team of cosplayers’ Scott Pilgrim versus New York Comic Con. One scene that I thought was quite humorous was having a Yu-Gi-Oh battle with Doctor Doom from Fantastic Four. However, the cards were of different characters outside of the Yu-Gi-Oh series. For example, one of the cards was Goku from Dragon Ball Z. Yes, there was a duel disk being used. In the end, the villain lost the battle and Scott and his girlfriend went on their merry way.

Fashion Show -

The Never Ending Closet fashion show was held in room 1E09 from 11:00am to 12:00pm. There was not a separate press line, so whoever wanted to be near the stage to get good shots, had to be there early waiting on line. Unfortunately, it was 20 minutes into the starting time when the attendees were allowed in. Because of the delayed start, the Q&A section was not conducted. However, I did enjoy the variety of fashion and many of which was not the Lolita style from Japan. I have never seen the non-Lolita styles before, so it was quite a treat to be introduced to something unfamiliar. The photos above are some of the outfits being modeled.
