Getting to Know: Stuart Levy and TOKYOPOP Part 3

Please read Part 2 of the interview before reading Part 3
TOKYOPOP

So, it is time to get into the business of TOKYOPOP. Let’s start with the basics. Most of us probably know that TOKYOPOP is located in the United States of America. However, the company is also in Europe and Japan. TOKYOPOP K.K., which is in Japan, “is a small office that has done licensing activity, manga production and other business development.” However, legally, it is the parent company of TOKYOPOP Inc. (U.S.A), TOKYOPOP GmbH (Germany) and TOKYOPOP Ltd. (UK). Even though TOKYOPOP K.K is the parent company, TOKYOPOP in Los Angeles and Hamburg, Germany have the most staff.

Getting to Know: Stuart Levy and TOKYOPOP Part 2

Please read Part 1 of the interview before reading Part 2
Knowing a Little Bit More

Before I came up with the questions for the interview, I had to do research on Levy. Plus, I did not want to ask questions that have already been answered. There were quite a few articles on this man, and some of the information caused a stir of questions in my mind.

Impressions: Mini Marvels

Aimlessly walking through the New York Comic Con 2009 artist alley, I came across something that I have never seen before. I spotted a cover of small Marvel characters and I instantly grabbed the book. First thing that came out of my mouth was "OMG! This is so cute!" I browse through the book while I was contemplating whether or not to purchase it. Again, I do not like buying stuff only to end up being disappointed. It is a horrible consumer moment. So, what did I do again? I took a risk and purchased Mini Marvels: Rock, Paper, Scissors by Chris Giarrusso.

Impressions: Emma

I usually read manga for entertainment, but this time I have read a story that provided a reality check, while showing the reader that in life there is hope. This story was “Emma,” manga series by Kaoru Mori published by CMX. The character, Emma, taught me something that I have not come across in other series. At least, I have not felt as strongly as I do with this series.

Impressions: Crime Scene Investigation Intern at Your Own Risk

The first time I saw this manga, I thought to myself: "No, this cannot be the same CSI from Channel 2." Then I flipped to the page where the credits were and found the names "CBS Productions" and "CBS Broadcasting, Inc." I was like "Oh my GOD! Seriously?" Initially, I was skeptical, because CSI was a show that I occasionally watch. I did not want to read a CSI manga that does not have the CSI flavor in it. After seeing it on bookshelves so many times, what did I decide to do? I took a risk by buying and reading it. I worried for nothing.

My First International Lolita Day Event

Before I go into details, I must say that it was an interesting and unexpected experience. So, let me start from the beginning.

The night before, I was figuring out whether or not I should wear a Lolita outfit. I heard there was going to be a storm, and I did not want the dress to get ruined. It took me quite some time to figure out what I wanted to do. My other dilemma was my uncertainty of which outfit to bring that will be convenient for me to carry. I know I wanted to wear an outfit that I have not worn, but which one! In the end, someone gave me a simple solution: if there is a bathroom, bring the dress and change there, and I settled with my two piece Qi Lolita outfit.

Running Around During Free Comic Book Day

On May 1, 2010, it was around 88 degrees in New York City. Out of all days to come outside and run around Manhattan, right? My hunt for comics felt like a citywide convention. I had to strategically figure out which comic bookstores to check out, while making the runs convenient and efficient. My motivation was to get the enjoyable and ever adorable Owly comic. (^_^)

Gaming at NYCC 2010

Article by Chet Royer

Hey there y'all. It's Chet, a.k.a. Ninja101, here to tell you guys about some gaming at NYCC. Although there wasn't a game room like many other cons that I have been to, there was a heavy gaming atmosphere on the show floor and in the NYCC artist alley. This atmosphere was caused by the exclusive hands on demos that were available. I will discuss a few that I was actually able to play.
