I Spy #Transformers at Special Edition: NYC 2014 #SENYC

I don’t usually go out and hunt for Transformers products, but I tend to spot it randomly. Usually, there is a booth with a wall or shelf of Transformers. Luckily, there was one, so it was hard to miss the Cybertronians. Enjoy some of the pictures!

Cosplay at Special Edition: NYC 2014 #SENYC

You know, I had a hard time taking cosplay photos. It wasn’t because of some technical difficulty. There were cosplayers, but there weren’t that many that impressed me enough to request a photo. I tend to get more than 25 photographs a day, but this time I did not. Usually, when I go to a convention, I can walk through an area and I’ll see cosplayers without even trying. At Special Edition: NYC, I had to scope out for cosplayers. It was an odd, but expected situation. Nonetheless, here are some of the cosplayers:

The cosplayer that stole the show. Even though he was missing his Captain America shield, everyone still wanted a picture.

The Blind Box Adventure with Puella Magi Madoka Magica Mascot

I was browsing through my comic book store when I spotted these. I became intrigued and decided to buy 3 of the blind boxes. This is where the “let’s pray that I don’t get duplicates” starts happening. I hoped to get Homura and what luck! Not only did I get her, but the other characters as well on the first try. Yay! No duplicates.

Cosplaying Adventures as Ty Lee

So for Friday at Anime Boston 2014, I cosplayed as Ty Lee from Avatar: The Last Airbender. I chose this character because 1) years ago someone told me that I could portray her and 2) since I happen to be flexible, it made the most sense. When I cosplay, there is some expectation that someone will request a picture. Even if there’s only one person that asks, it will happen when you cosplay. However, I had other reactions from a certain demographic of attendees. Let’s start from the beginning.

Cosplay Feud/Death Match at #AnimeBoston 2014

Here’s a general overview of what a Cosplay Feud/Death Match was. The format of the show was fairly simple. Projected on the screen were images of characters that entered the competition. If I am not mistaken, the characters were randomly picked to duel. Once the selection had been made, a slide of the two combatants was projected onto the screen and the respective characters appeared on stage. Following that, Kaiba, who was the Master of Ceremony (MC), placed his hand over each cosplayer and the one with the most cheers was declared as the victor. Obviously it’s not a real duel and it lasted for about 10 seconds. Once the duel was completed, the loser admitted defeat and was more or less dragged away by the other losers. Then the cycle repeated itself.

Cosplay at #AnimeBoston 2014

Pirates plus a Batman. When I was taking the photo, I did not notice anything usual. After I said my thank you to the pirates, Batman approached me and said to look at the picture. That’s when I noticed the photobombing Batman.

#SailorMoon Signing at #AnimeBoston 2014

When Anime Boston announced their Sailor Moon English and Japanese dub guests, I started doing some research on each of them. Once I learned which season or episode that they were involved in, I went digging through DVDs and VHS in hopes to find something for the guests to sign. Ideally, I wanted all the signatures on one item. Well, that didn’t happen.

Transformers Hunt at #NYCC 2013

Was it really a hunt? It probably was because it was one of the first things I thought about for New York Comic Con (NYCC). Some of the products I was looking for were intentional, but the others, I just randomly spotted them.

One of the things I do before going to the convention is go to their website and look up the convention exclusive items that dealers may have. One of them was Lunar Toy Store and the item listed was an Asian Exclusive Grimlock. I had no knowledge of this store or the item, so it peaked my curiosity enough for me to check it out. Well upon discovery, they have a variety of unique toys, but I cannot afford any of them. Regardless, in the words of Chet Royer, this is my “Bandai booth for Transformers.”

Autograph Hunt at #NYCC 2013

ou know, I usually DON’T have many autographs to get, maybe one or two. However, for some strange reason (!), I had quite a few things at home that I could get signed by the artists and authors, who were attending. So I figured, why not?

Max Brooks and artist Shane Davis for Shadow Walk

Brooks is known for World War Z. Davis is recognized for his art in Superman/Batman and Superman: Earth One. The last time I went to the Autograph area was for Ian Whyte, who played as the Predator from AVP: Alien vs. Predator. I tend not to go to these things, because there isn't anyone that interests me or the cost of the autograph is not worth it. HOWEVER, the cost to have Brooks sign my World War Z book and both of them to sign their new series was ZERO! Can’t miss out on that now.

Media Report: Kids Comic Con at #NYCC 2013

Captain KC

We had our own room! Well, sort of. It was called the Family Room. Digging into my memory bank, the last time there was a dedicated space for children was a few years back up in the River Pavilion and Galleria area. After that year, the space was used for other purposes and Sunday was Kids Day. Unfortunately, for that day, its dedicated children events were mixed in with the older crowd events that may or may not have been appropriate. So, when I learned about the location of Kids Comic Con, I was pleased that, finally, there was a location for an all age audience. Let’s take a look at what was happening in the Family Room.

Cosplay at #NYCC 2013

I was standing on line to get something signed and I spotted this cosplay, but only from shoulder up. The hair style looked vaguely familiar, especially that little piece in front of the forehead. So I approached the young lady and asked her if she was Mulan. Apparently, she is Jedi Mulan, which explains the light saber and the alteration to Mulan’s green outfit. Very cute.

I Spy Anime and Manga at NYCC 2013

Happinet Corporation – I have never seen nor heard of this company. However, I can tell you about my interaction with them. They introduced me to their Japanese Motion Comics on the tablets that you see in the picture above. I saw characters move in the panels, but I do not recall audio. Once I reviewed each of the manga featured on each tablet, I was given a survey to complete. Then I played a dice game to see if I could win a pack of napkins. None of the dice had a match.

#NYCC 2013 - Random Commentary Saturday

I walked into the building and these guys were one of the first things attendees would spot. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the Nickelodeon series were located outside the show floor and was available for photo ops. What I like about the costumes is that, instead of just looking like the characters, they match the character designs in the series.

#NYCC 2013 - Random Commentary Friday

Intel…what can I say about it? They have been present for a few years now. Honestly, they don’t look much different. From the looks of it the booth itself seems to be the same design and takes up the same amount of floor space. Probably the only difference (besides new games) is in recent years, they were moved to the back instead of the front of the show floor.

Getting to Know: John Stocker, Voice Director of Sailor Moon Part 7

Please read Part 6 of the interview before reading Part 7

Specific Events -
The Super Mario Brothers Show, The Adventures Super Mario Brothers 3, Super Mario World

I'd never heard of John Stocker until Anime Boston 2014 made their Sailor Moon guest announcement. That’s basically how I learned about his involvement in Sailor Moon. After looking up his name on the internet, I came across his IMBD resume and I learned that he portrayed Toad from The Super Mario Brothers Show.

Getting to Know: John Stocker, Voice Director of Sailor Moon Part 6

Please read Part 5 of the interview before reading Part 6

Specific Events - Sailor Moon continuation

When we have obtained a new responsibility, we might do some homework as preparation for completing the task at hand. It may be days or weeks in advance. However, in Stocker’s case, the cast and everyone else involved in the recording would not get the scripts or any of the video footage until…wait for it…right before they started recording. I kid you not. “Two or three days at the most for the scripts, and sometimes the other elements arrived at the studio well after our sessions were supposed to begin.” In another words, there isn’t much preparation time. “We often recorded lines we’d never seen till 5 minutes before we started work.”

Getting to Know: John Stocker, Voice Director of Sailor Moon Part 5

Please read Part 4 of the interview before reading Part 5

Now we are getting to the part that you probably have been waiting for: his involvement with Sailor Moon.

Getting to Know: John Stocker, Voice Director of Sailor Moon Part 4

Please read Part 3 of the interview before reading Part 4

Voice Teaching with Stocker

Let’s add one more career to his resume: voice teaching. He had received a number of requests from voice agents who knew him and the aspiring talents that looked up to Stocker. At that point, he “realized there was a real need for one on one instruction.” He is not into the one room schoolhouse approach for voice acting lessons. If it was a classroom environment, he would be dealing with various levels of experience and skills of each student. Plus, he sincerely loves to shares what he's learned with others. “Perhaps, at the bottom of it all, is that human desire to be needed. I’m still an actor, and actors are actors because they need their egos stroked more than most people. I’m flattered by the attention.”

Thursday, June 12, 2014

Getting to Know: John Stocker, Voice Director of Sailor Moon Part 3

Please read Part 2 of the interview before reading Part 3

Voice Director Stocker

Another one of Stocker's careers is that of a Voice Director, which involves scheduling and knowing the script. In regards to the first, he has to schedule the recording and be sure that it is completed within the allotted time. Regarding the script, the recording is not done as a full cast ensemble. Because most animation is recorded one performer at a time, “I need to know how every single line in the script has to be delivered…Sometimes the two sides of a dialogue are recorded days or even weeks apart.”

Getting to Know: John Stocker, Voice Director of Sailor Moon Part 2

Please read Part 1 of the interview before reading Part 2

Life of a Voice Actor continuation

The work is completed and you get your paycheck. I understand that some actors get paid even after they have already portrayed their characters for a TV series or movie. For example they get money from a portion of a DVD sale or possibly webstreaming. Stocker told me that these are called “residuals” and it is something that actors love. He goes on to explain the process, “commercials or animation productions run in cycles. Some are weekly and some are yearly. When the cycles are completed, the producers must pay performers again for the production to continue running. The amount of the payment is usually based upon a unit value, which is determined by the potential market audience in that particular locale.”

Getting to Know: John Stocker, Voice Director of Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon was anime that many of us from the 1990's generation probably watched. Whether you are an anime fan or not, I'm pretty sure many have at least heard of the title. So when Anime Boston announced that they were bringing guests from the series I was in hype mode!

Now one of the guests intrigued me. Why you ask? Because he has an EXTENSIVE resume in the industry. I wanted to get to know John Stocker, not just as the Director of Sailor Moon, but as the multi talented individual. I wanted him to share with you his knowledge and experience. He kindly agreed and without further ado, I present to you: John Stocker.
