The Love Live! Adventure at Anime Boston 2016

It was announced that KLabs, the people behind the online mobile game Love Live! School Idol Festival, was going to be at the convention. Not too long before the announcement I learned of Love Live! because I started watching the anime. I knew it had a fan base. Unfortunately, I had no idea how HUGE the fan base was.

On Friday, I was casually browsing around the Dealers Room to see what the vendors had to offer. Around early afternoon, I reached the KLabs booth and asked about the products they were selling. To my astonishment, the merchandise was sold out within the first hour of the opening! There was nothing left to buy that day. That’s when I knew how extremely popular Love Live! was.

Cosplay is NOT Consent Includes Cosplayers Too

I’ve been contemplating for a few days now on whether or not I write about my Cosplay is not Consent experience. Should I write about what happened? Do I want to relive the unfortunate experience? Is it worth being told? Once I asked myself these questions, I realized that my experience should inform cosplayers that they are NOT an exception to the rule.

Kantai Collection Sightings at Anime Boston 2015

When the convention opened, I was hoping to find some merchandise from Kantai Collection. I was unsure of the popularity, however, but I am glad I saw some items. I couldn’t get enough of KanColle. Check out my sightings below!

Buttons! I love buttons but they were too expensive for me. Plus, I would have prefer other characters instead.

Anime Boston: Good Security Checks, Bad Crowd Controls

Beginning with Anime Boston 2013, security has improved on their checkpoints. However, when it came to crowd control, they need to find a better solution or improve on it for 2014.

Cosplaying Adventures as Ty Lee

So for Friday at Anime Boston 2014, I cosplayed as Ty Lee from Avatar: The Last Airbender. I chose this character because 1) years ago someone told me that I could portray her and 2) since I happen to be flexible, it made the most sense. When I cosplay, there is some expectation that someone will request a picture. Even if there’s only one person that asks, it will happen when you cosplay. However, I had other reactions from a certain demographic of attendees. Let’s start from the beginning.

Cosplay Feud/Death Match at #AnimeBoston 2014

Here’s a general overview of what a Cosplay Feud/Death Match was. The format of the show was fairly simple. Projected on the screen were images of characters that entered the competition. If I am not mistaken, the characters were randomly picked to duel. Once the selection had been made, a slide of the two combatants was projected onto the screen and the respective characters appeared on stage. Following that, Kaiba, who was the Master of Ceremony (MC), placed his hand over each cosplayer and the one with the most cheers was declared as the victor. Obviously it’s not a real duel and it lasted for about 10 seconds. Once the duel was completed, the loser admitted defeat and was more or less dragged away by the other losers. Then the cycle repeated itself.

Pirates plus a Batman. When I was taking the photo, I did not notice anything usual. After I said my thank you to the pirates, Batman approached me and said to look at the picture. That’s when I noticed the photobombing Batman.

When Anime Boston announced their Sailor Moon English and Japanese dub guests, I started doing some research on each of them. Once I learned which season or episode that they were involved in, I went digging through DVDs and VHS in hopes to find something for the guests to sign. Ideally, I wanted all the signatures on one item. Well, that didn’t happen.

The Blood Drive located in the Sheraton outside the Artist Alley. The only thing I liked was the plush. Haha. It looks so big and friendly!

Need More Support for Original Cosplay Fashion Show!

This is the first time that Anime Boston was hosting such an event, which I was really excited about! I was like “yeah! I get to see some creativity!” This provided cosplayers the opportunity to portray non-canonical characters, such as series mashups and gender bending, and completely original characters.

The format was fairly simple and direct. The cosplayer(s) were called on to the stage, strike a pose, some acted in character while answering questions presented by the Master of Ceremony (some were funny, while others were just plain dull), and then they walk off the stage back to their seats. Anime Boston 2013 – Lolita Fashion Show!

As always, this is one of the panels that I look forward to every year at Anime Boston. However, this year the panel was hosted by Kiki and Heather. Similar to last year, it began with an introduction to Lolita Fashion, including the multiple styles, types of clothing and accessories that are incorporated in the fashion. The panelists made a distinction that Lolita is not cosplay, because it is a subculture fashion in Japan. Also, a video of Misako Aoki and Midori Fukasawa at the new Baby, the Stars Shine Bright store was presented at the panel. Unfortunately, there was a technical problem playing the entire video, but here’s the video below!

My Adventures at Madoka Magica with Lauren Landa

On Friday, I went to check out the video game room, because it was supposed to be open. However, it was not open yet and a line had already formed. Instead of waiting around for it, I decided to walk down the hallway to see what was happening in Panel Room C. To my surprise, Lauren Landa, who is the voice of Kyoko Sakura, was having a panel. I heard that she was a guest this year and was having a panel, but I did not realize that her panel was happening now at this location.

Honestly speaking, this is the first time that I have seen a Huntress at a convention, period, including New York Comic Con. So, when I spotted this cosplayer in the Artist Alley, and I was hyped, because she looked like Huntress from the comics! I ended up asking her if she was Huntress and she was! :3

Thumbs Up To Anime Boston & Massachusetts Convention Center Authority

First off, I would like to compliment Anime Boston (AB) and the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) on their smooth and quick entry process. Second, thank you for making the Volunteers visually obvious amongst the crowd. This was especially important if an emergency happened and we needed to find the proper assistance.

Anime Boston 2012 - Anime Unscripted

This was an event that I was looking forward to at the convention. Even though I missed part of the show (guessing 30 minutes), the less than comical talent was not expected. I was disappointed in the performance, because it did not end my night with laughter. Instead, I got two actors with no comical skills, while the others were the only ones who gave me a good laugh.

Here we have Chris Ayres at the podium, who delivered his character with comical, yet serious, responses. The other actors (left to right) Keith Silverstein, Carli Mosier and Greg Ayres had to ask questions that referred to the situation that Chris's character was in. However, Chris has no knowledge of said situation and had to figure out what it was. Unfortunately, he actually had NO IDEA what the actors were talking about. He literally said “I have no idea what you're talking about” and I recall one of the actors trying to spoon feed him the answer. It took a while, but he did fine in the end.

Media Report: Lolita Fashion at Anime Boston 2012

On Saturday April 7 at 2pm was the start of the Lolita Fashion: Style for The Frilly Masses panel. It began with a 90 minute slide show presentation introducing the fashion, the styles, like Wa and Pirate, and the type of clothing pieces, such as tops and bottoms, involved in it.
