Hello there! Here is another review by me, Chet a.k.a. Ninja101! (...I might as well put that in there) At NYAF 2009, a short animated feature known as Cencoroll was shown. This anime was created completely by one person, Atsuya Uki. According to NYAF, Atsuya created this anime all on his own. He did everything. It’s a very impressive anime to behold, but learning that a single person did all of it on their own is even more impressive.
The story seems rather simple. It just throws you into a universe that has its own rules. Cencoroll is about a young boy, Tetsu, with a large blob like creature, Cenco, that can transform into practically anything. Tetsu seems to be able to control Cenco via telepathy. However, he is not the only boy who possess one of these blob like creatures. It also seems that the boy must defeat other blobs that appear. So the main plot is a conflict between Tetsu and another boy named Shu, who wants to capture Cenco and keep him for himself. Shu already possess two of these blobs.
The animation is top notch. Fluid and crisp movements. Its reminiscent of an animation production company known as Gainax (responsible for an anime called Fooly Cooly). The character designs are not amazing or special, but they fit the story perfectly. Simple is some times better. The blobs, man the blobs! I love them. They are cute in like a creepy way. They tend to have big creepy like eyes and sharp teeth but they are big in a cuddly way. The way they move is like a stubborn puppy. They will do what they want but obey to an extent.
In speaking of how the blobs move, the characters have personality. Each significant character was well thought out. I cannot emphasize how much I love the blobs! They show so much personality just through simple actions. They do not speak, they just move about.
All in all, this is a nice little animated feature. It will probably put a smile on your face and amaze you with nice animation and cute blobs! This kind of feels like Blood: The Last Vampire. It is an anime made specifically just to be physically pleasing and give your mind a little tug. I would recommend watching Cencoroll (more than Blood: The Last Vampire) though.
