Sunday Adventures at New York Comic Con 2016

I was supposed to cosplay this day, but I decided not to because 1) it was going to rain and 2) I wanted to wake up early enough to hit all the booths I missed on the show floor. Good idea on my part. Cosplay would have taken up too much preparation time. Also, that morning, I think, I received an alert from NYCC about NOT going there too early because of the rain. It worked because I got inside the queue hall fairly quickly without waiting in the rain.

Saturday Adventures at New York Comic Con 2016

Saturday…As a veteran attendee of this event, I knew it was going to be bad. However, after seeing how Friday went, I questioned how smoothly Saturday would be. Well, some moments went well, others...were an eye opener.

Today, as every convention Saturday tends to be, it’s the day you see the most cosplay. I dressed up as Morgiana from Magi the Labyrinth of Magic. It was a very convenient outfit to wear, but…I still needed a bag and…A JACKET! It was cold! My cosplay doesn’t have sleeves, so I had to keep warm. At least this time when I arrived at the convention area, there wasn’t a line fiasco. I was able to walk into the convention and accomplished my first task.

Scarlet Witch at New York Comic Con 2016

Friday Adventures at New York Comic Con 2016

Oh boy. Where do I begin? The line situation that was a conundrum or what I accomplished that day? Maybe about my strategies around the convention center? Yes, let’s start with my planning and end the day on a happy note.

Before Friday arrived, I planned out what I had to do and what items to bring to get signed. Friday was basically going to be autograph day, while cosplaying as Scarlet Witch from Age of Ultron. Since I would be blazing out the door to beat the crowd on Friday morning, I had to pack my books and lay out cosplay essentials, like makeup, the night before.

Thursday Adventures at New York Comic Con 2016

This was the day where I did only straight shopping for exclusives or simply first dips on whatever was available. My shopping list is based on what dealers announced through their social media or newsletter and exclusives listed on the convention website. However, any good veteran of NYCC knows that to get the goods, you gotta wake up at the crack of dawn. I reached the area and lined up around 7:30am. The line was already down 40th street and 12th Avenue. It’s good to have something or someone to keep you occupied for the LONG wait until 10am. Yes, the early bird DOES catch the worm at NYCC.

When it was time for us to go to the show floor, the first booth I went to was Good Smile Company. They announced their exclusives on their Instagram and there’s one that I’ve been eyeing on. When I first discovered it, it was only available at Wonder Festival 2015, which is in Japan. So, obviously for me, it was my first shopping target. There was only about 6 people in line for the booth, so I had a good chance of purchasing it. When it was my turn, I asked about the product to get official confirmation that it’s the same figure from Wonder Festival 2015 and yes, it was. It’s basically a convention exclusive, so I couldn’t get it officially from retailers. $50 flat and I’m done with the first thing on my list!

Next booth I went to was on the other side of the show floor: IDW Publishing. They were selling a convention exclusive Revolution #1 black and white cover comic, which has Transformers in it. There was no line, so it was fairly easy for me to get it. Smart move on my end was that I brought a bag and board for the issue. It would have died in my bag.

Viz Media’s booth was visibly nearby, so I went there to get the Assassination Classroom Vol. 13. However, I was only getting that if the free pin was still available. Because they were selling the book at retail price, there was no point of me getting the book without the pin. Yes, they had the pin and I got the Sailor Moon tote bag and whatever freebies were there.

Then I went to Chevy, because they were giving away free t-shirts. However, when I reached the booth, apparently, they were other giveaways: a cape and string bag. Since my goal was to get the t-shirt, I went for that first. It was fairly simple. All I had to do was fill out a survey and sign up for information on a specific car that I was interested in. Here’s the best part, the booth people said that I can come back each day to complete it again and get another freebie. Sweet!

Now after my adventures at Chevy, I decided to just go to the nearby booths that were on my list of freebies instead of continuing with my shopping. I was confident that those things I wanted were still available. So I went to the Yen Press and Crunchyroll. Yen Press was giving out pins that was announced prior to the show date and their other freebies like posters and tattoos. Crunchyroll had grab bags for sale, but it’s the same ones from Otakon. Didn’t want to get the same merchandise. I ended up getting free posters instead.

Since I couldn’t think of what else I wanted, I decided to go back to my shopping list. Back to the other side of the show floor! I ended up reaching McCalls and Simplicity’s booths. They were literally adjacent to each other, McCall’s was facing the back of Simplicity’s booth. I went to the latter first because I was intrigued by the booth. It looked like a 1950’s malt shop with mannequins dressed up in the styles from that era, but inspired about our comic book characters. They RARELY have sales on their websites, so I had to buy their $5 patterns. Unfortunately, they only brought a select few, but it’s better than not being able to buy any. Then I went to McCalls booth and brought their $10 and $5 pattern from their Cosplay by McCalls and the Vault Collection, respectively. It’s better than paying for the shipping and handling and the price was better than their sales online by a few dollars.

By now, my bag was probably close to 20lbs: purchases and freebies. However, I had to buy a limited edition Persona 4 pins, and then, hours later, I remembered to go to the booths that sold Lolita fashion items. I went to The Block to get blind box pins. Yes, each box contained a random pair of limited edition pins. I forgot the price…$15 or $25? Well, I only brought one box and I got Yukiko Amagi and Naoto Shirogane. Thankfully, the booth staff had pins on the side that I could do a trade. I switched Yukiko for Yosuke Hanamura.

I started randomly roaming around and getting freebies. Then somehow I remember the two Lolita fashion booths. I was hoping to find something music related because I was a musician and grew up loving music. I went to the Lolita Collective booth and was contemplating on whether or not to buy a $60 violin belly bag. I decided not to, because of the stitching. Then I went to Twylite Fashion and I saw a headband with a violin on it. Since I have straight hair, I had to make sure the headband didn’t fall off. After I tried it on, the headband stayed put and I gladly purchased it. Lastly, a kind individual gave me their unwanted Geico plush…that I’ve been trying to get for years!

So, that’s basically my Thursday! It was the perfect day to shop and grab whatever freebie was available! Definitely going back next year on a Thursday for whatever exclusives or first day freebies there are. See you in NYCC 2017!

Alena Leonova as Harley Quinn at the 2016 Trophee de France

I'm not sure what to think of this...when I saw her costume I was like "ehhhhh...Judges might not like itttt." Yeah, if the judges were traditional, they may not be open minded to a non-skating dress without bedazzle. I cosplay and figure skate, and I went bug eyed on the costume. She could have dressed up as Harley Quinn, but visually, the costume quality does not meet the same standards as other skaters in her level. Unfortunately, the costume did not look professionally done. For goodness sakes! She's skating at a Grand Prix competition! If you can make it to that competition, you are pretty high in the rankings. Also, the music...it's "It's Oh So Quiet" by Björk and I remember hearing it in the movie "Ice Princess." Not sure how the music relates to Harley Quinn though.

What's it Like to Audition for a Yu-Gi-Oh Voice Over Role

How many of you had that moment where you were curious if you can make THAT voice you just heard? That happened to me when I was watching 1st Generation Pokemon and heard Pikachu’s voice. Somehow I thought to myself, “huh, I wonder if I can do that?” After watching how many episodes later, one day, I decided to repeat after the character and the voice just came out. No, I did not practice. Years went by and I didn’t think there was much to this minor ability. Then at New York Comic Con 2016, I saw a sign for a Yu-Gi-Oh voice over audition/contest. My thoughts went back to the time when I was doing Pikachu’s voice. I questioned whether or not this was something I wanted to try. I thought about it for a day or two and I said “why, not? It won’t hurt.” I did for the experience; to see what it was like. It was definitely an eye-opening experience.

There's one where she does a cosplay version, while the other one is in an elegant blue skating dress.

Cosplaying as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch from Avengers: Age of Ultron

I don’t remember exactly how I learned about the movie or character, but do remember looking up as many photos as possible including those from a professional agency. Basically, I made the outfit before the movie came out. I picked the character because of the outfit. I like the tough yet feminine look it has plus I figured could finally have a non-anime related character cosplay for New York Comic Con.

The Love Live! Adventure at Anime Boston 2016

It was announced that KLabs, the people behind the online mobile game Love Live! School Idol Festival, was going to be at the convention. Not too long before the announcement I learned of Love Live! because I started watching the anime. I knew it had a fan base. Unfortunately, I had no idea how HUGE the fan base was.

On Friday, I was casually browsing around the Dealers Room to see what the vendors had to offer. Around early afternoon, I reached the KLabs booth and asked about the products they were selling. To my astonishment, the merchandise was sold out within the first hour of the opening! There was nothing left to buy that day. That’s when I knew how extremely popular Love Live! was.

Activities at Winter Con 2015

Treasure Chest booth. Yes, people played the game and won the consoles. I was contemplating whether or not I should play.

Adventures at Winter Con 2015

This was my first Winter Con and my initial concern was that it was in the middle of nowhere, sort of. It’s pretty deep in Queens and I never been at that area. I did look up the location, and it is located in a casino. Next was trying to figure out HOW to get there.

Unlike the MTA, the casino’s shuttle bus service does not have proper signage at their stops, so I had a difficult time figuring out where I should actually wait for this bus. Luckily, before the day of the con, I spotted a casino bus and ask the driver where I should wait for the bus tomorrow. So on the day of, I waited 10 minutes prior to where I was supposed to stand.

There’s just one problem with this otherwise cute couple: Kurihara is so obsessed with her Momo-kun that she’s sneaking photos of him on her phone, freaking out when they touch, and blushing at every adorable thing he does. Can Kurihara’s little heart handle her nearly manic love for her new boyfriend?
