Need More Support for Original Cosplay Fashion Show!

This is the first time that Anime Boston was hosting such an event, which I was really excited about! I was like “yeah! I get to see some creativity!” This provided cosplayers the opportunity to portray non-canonical characters, such as series mashups and gender bending, and completely original characters.

The format was fairly simple and direct. The cosplayer(s) were called on to the stage, strike a pose, some acted in character while answering questions presented by the Master of Ceremony (some were funny, while others were just plain dull), and then they walk off the stage back to their seats. Here are some of the pictures of the cosplayers:

Anime Boston 2013 – Lolita Fashion Show!

As always, this is one of the panels that I look forward to every year at Anime Boston. However, this year the panel was hosted by Kiki and Heather. Similar to last year, it began with an introduction to Lolita Fashion, including the multiple styles, types of clothing and accessories that are incorporated in the fashion. The panelists made a distinction that Lolita is not cosplay, because it is a subculture fashion in Japan. Also, a video of Misako Aoki and Midori Fukasawa at the new Baby, the Stars Shine Bright store was presented at the panel. Unfortunately, there was a technical problem playing the entire video, but here’s the video below!

My Adventures at Madoka Magica with Lauren Landa

On Friday, I went to check out the video game room, because it was supposed to be open. However, it was not open yet and a line had already formed. Instead of waiting around for it, I decided to walk down the hallway to see what was happening in Panel Room C. To my surprise, Lauren Landa, who is the voice of Kyoko Sakura, was having a panel. I heard that she was a guest this year and was having a panel, but I did not realize that her panel was happening now at this location.

Honestly speaking, this is the first time that I have seen a Huntress at a convention, period, including New York Comic Con. So, when I spotted this cosplayer in the Artist Alley, and I was hyped, because she looked like Huntress from the comics! I ended up asking her if she was Huntress and she was! :3

1. Have you ever come across a comic storyline that boggled your mind so bad that you just couldn’t figure out how to apply any law or regulations and wish you were able to? If yes, what was it about?

RD: This actually happens with some regularity in Golden and Silver Age comics. Some of the plots are just downright silly in ways that make legal analysis somewhat superfluous. Comic books frequently contain impossible things, and that as such doesn’t pose any particular difficulty for us. But when they contain downright illogical things, the analysis can switch rapidly from “That’s illegal!” to “Okay, that’s just dumb.”

Comics and the Law

1. From looking through your book, you reference varies laws and cases, and it would be hard to bring in a superhero unmasked to a court room.

a. However, is it possible to have a superhero appears at any level of the court system or type of court, whether it be state, supreme, federal, civil, criminal, etc. if s/he became a defendant or a witness to a case?

JD: This is a complicated question. For example, the Confrontation Clause only applies to criminal cases, which means that it’s possible that superheroes could testify while masked in civil cases.

RD: As James says, that’s a really complicated question. But I will say that of the half-dozen or so judges to whom I’ve put similar questions, not a single one hesitated to say that they’d order the person in question to take off their mask as a matter of course. There is no general right to anonymity, so any interaction between a masked character and the judicial system is going to probably result in the mask coming off.

The Coming of The Law and The Multiverse

So far their experience running and writing for the site has been full of “positive surprises.” It also helps to have a positive support system; their colleagues have been very supportive of their blog and book, The Law of Superheroes, but how did the dynamic duo come together?

I understand that Daily teamed up with Davidson through MetaFilter. Till this day, the internet is not considered a safe place for many. Plus, one may not know who s/he is really talking to. Now my question to the lovely gentlemen is how did they know that the other person is who they were really talking to and that they were going to provide the same amount of dedication to the site as they would?

I first learned about Law and the Multiverse through a law librarian. He showed me an article in a journal (probably related to law librarianship) about comic books and the law. From a quick glance, I thought it was going to be about some copyright situation. However, when I had the time to read the article, I was intrigued. I thought using comic book storylines in teaching law or at least for us non-lawyers to understand was an interesting approach. So, I started checking their website and purchased their book. Then I had an opportunity to meet them at their NYCC 2012 panel, and now I present to you my interview with James Daily (JD) and Ryan Davidson (RD).

First off, I would like to compliment Anime Boston (AB) and the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) on their smooth and quick entry process. Second, thank you for making the Volunteers visually obvious amongst the crowd. This was especially important if an emergency happened and we needed to find the proper assistance.

Otakon Isn't Perfect

As big and popular as Otakon is, no convention is perfect and flaws do existence. Every convention has that and all they can do is learn and try to amend and/or improve it.

Volunteer Appearance

The volunteer staff members were easy to spot, because they each wore a black Otakon shirt. However, the non-staff volunteers were dress down and some were in cosplay. I am not even sure if they had special name tags because all I saw were badges around everyone’s neck that looked like the tickets to the con. It would have been useful if the volunteers had a color theme that would help identify them as such, like having them wear yellow shirts and/or have each of them wear a sticker name tag that says “Otakon Volunteer” on their shirt. Unfortunately, they blended in with the rest of us. Having something visible and uniformed amongst the non-staff volunteers would make it easier to spot them out. If I cannot find a person in black, I would not have known WHO to ask for help to get help from a staff member.

San Diego, CA (April 12, 2013) – Following the success of their ongoing series of new Judge Dredd comics, IDW is bringing 2000 AD’s classic stories back as they’ve never been seen before… in color! Beginning with a special Free Comic Book Day issue on May 4, JUDGE DREDD CLASSICS will bring the stories that started it all to a new audience and a new age.

The Free Comic Book Day issue will offer the fan-favorite “Judge Death” stories written by John Wagner, illustrated by Brian Bolland, and given vivid new life by colorist Charlie Kirchoff. And then in July, the monthly JUDGE DREDD CLASSICS series, also featuring new colors by Kirchoff on every issue, will begin with the seminal “Block Mania”/”Apocalypse War” storyline scripted by John Wagner and Alan Grant, and illustrated by Mike McMahon, Ron Smith, Steve Dillon, Brian Bolland and Carlos Ezquerra. As an added bonus, artist Jim Fern will be providing all-new covers for every issue when the series makes its monthly debut this summer. The post-apocalyptic world created over thousands of pages of 2000 A.D. is one of the richest in comics history, and IDW couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing that to new generations of fans.

As always, fans are encouraged to make their own decisions, but this summer it should be advised that not buying JUDGE DREDD CLASSICS could result in life in the Iso-Cubes!

The 123,000 sq. ft of Dealers Room space was an anime/manga dream mall. I love the fact that there was a large dedicated space for such merchandise and products. Where else can I find a variety or even items that I have never seen before?
